The distinction comes down to age. Vintage rugs are generally 30 to 99 years old, while antique rugs are 100 years or older. Both are hand-knotted and collectible, but antique rugs typically command higher prices due to rarity. Unlike mass-produced rugs that wear out, vintage rugs were crafted to last generations. Most authentic vintage rugs originate from rug-weaving regions in Iran (Persia), Turkey, Morocco, the Caucasus, and Central Asia. At Rug Source, the majority of our vintage rugs are hand-knotted in Iran, with notable collections from Turkey, Morocco, and Afghanistan. Each origin brings distinct weaving traditions, knot densities, and pattern styles.
Authentic vintage rugs are hand-knotted (visible by inspecting the back — knots will be slightly irregular), made from natural materials like wool or silk, and show genuine signs of age such as softened pile, mellowed dyes, and minor irregularities. Vacuum vintage rugs regularly without a rotating beater bar, rotate them every six months for even wear, and address spills immediately with a clean white cloth. Professional cleaning every 18–24 months is recommended — never use steam cleaners or harsh chemicals on hand-knotted wool.
